Mary Beard--The Complete Roman History in 4 hours--
After Daw Suzy Hla--who taught us about the French Revolution,this is easily my favorite history teacher--
She looks always as if she needs a haircut, and just the teeniest bit of eye pencil around her eyes--but no one explains it better--how the Roman Empire was "all joined up" and why it worked, while it worked.
For why it fell apart you have to read other books like Edward Gibbons, and new theories--including its horrific slave economy and "entertainments."
You may draw your own conclusions and modern analogies. I don't wish to do it here.
