Definition of dissent intransitive verb 1 : to withhold assent or approval 2 : to differ in opinion Three of the justices dissented from the majority opinion.
Murphy's dissent U.S. Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy Justice Frank Murphy issued a vehement dissent, saying that the exclusion of Japanese "falls into the ugly abyss of racism", and resembles "the abhorrent and despicable treatment of minority groups by the dictatorial tyrannies which this nation is now pledged to destroy." He also compared the treatment of Japanese Americans with the treatment of Americans of German and Italian ancestry, as evidence that race, and not emergency alone, led to the exclusion order which Korematsu was convicted of violating: "I dissent, therefore, from this legalization of racism. Racial discrimination in any form and in any degree has no justifiable part whatever in our democratic way of life. It is unattractive in any setting, but it is utterly revolting among a free people who have embraced the principles set forth in the Constitution of the United States. All residents of this nation are kin in some way by blood or culture to a foreign land. Yet they are primarily and necessarily a part of the new and distinct civilization of the United States. They must, accordingly, be treated at all times as the heirs of the American experiment, and as entitled to all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution." Justice Murphy's two uses of the term "racism" in this opinion, along with two additional uses in his concurrence in Steele v Louisville & Nashville Railway Co, decided the same day, are among the first appearances of the word "racism" in a United States Supreme Court opinion. The first appearance was in Justice Murphy's concurrence

From 2007 to 2011, Martel ran a guerrilla book club with the then Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, sending the Prime Minister a book every two weeks for four years, a total of more than a hundred novels, plays, poetry collections, graphic novels and children's books. Each gift was accompanied by a letter explaining the worth of the book. The point was to make clear to Stephen Harper that reading literature is not only a pleasure, but an essential way of knowing the world and understanding life. For all his efforts, Martel received not a single reply from the Prime Minister. The letters were published as a book in 2012, 101 Letters to a Prime Minister. The Polish magazine Histmag cited him as the inspiration behind their giving of books to the Prime Minister Donald Tusk, however, this was a one-off with only 10 books involved, which had been donated by their publishers and selected by readers of the magazine. Tusk reacted very positively.

https://lithub.com/my-mysterious-mother-beauty-queen-rebel-leader-national-icon/ I sat next to Jonathan in Middle School, and next to Louisa in college in E. Lit. She was back in Burma for a short time during this period c. 1962, when Ne Win staged his coup. She looked so sad, and always wore one of only 2 sets of clothes, both sets old and tired-looking, in muted colors. I am sorry her early years were so full of tragedy, but glad she came to the USA and her marriage was a happy one. I often saw her on the "Burmese democracy circuit" --the last time in Boulder CO, where we spoke of the trafficking of women. I heard of the sad way J. died, and when I saw her again at the home of our other friend Taw Myo Myint, now also passed away, I didn't have the heart to ask her, but as soon as she sat down on Taw's old sofa. she told me at once how J. had died. Taw kept a simple home too, because she was helping Burmese refugees. Still, she gave me her bamboo rice ladle at once, and insisted I take it. I noticed it was the only new item in her kitchen drawer. The day she died, I accidentally burned it while using it in the kitchen. Taw chained herself to a Total truck in El Segundo, CA, to protest and get Total out of Burma. Eventually, it went back. It's so sad when people are harassed based on their race and religion. Karen or Kayin is an ethnic group of Burma. Charmaine Craig was the human model for Disney's Pocahontas. I wanted to learn the ethnic languages when I was in Burma, but there were no classes and there was no one to teach me. I was guided to "books written outside Burma from the other side of the border" by my librarian brother, but I could not get my hands on those either. I thought our other Methodist High School alumni, Eugene Thaike had died in battle, because that's what the govt newspapers wrote. When I asked his sister delicately when I saw her in Princeton, she burst out laughing. Eugene died in 2004 or so of a brain tumor. He was born a prince of one of the Shan royal families. Shan is another Burmese ethnic group. kmk Kyi May Kaung Words Sounds and Images
Role of the media The connection between the break-in and the re-election committee was highlighted by media coverage—in particular, investigative coverage by The Washington Post, Time, and The New York Times. The coverage dramatically increased publicity and consequent political repercussions. Relying heavily upon anonymous sources, Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered information suggesting that knowledge of the break-in, and attempts to cover it up, led deeply into the upper reaches of the Justice Department, FBI, CIA, and the White House. Woodward and Bernstein interviewed Judy Hoback Miller, the bookkeeper for Nixon, who revealed to them information about the mishandling of funds and records being destroyed. Chief among the Post's anonymous sources was an individual whom Woodward and Bernstein had nicknamed Deep Throat; 33 years later, in 2005, the informant was identified as William Mark Felt, Sr., deputy director of the FBI during that period of the 1970s, something Woodward later confirmed. Felt met secretly with Woodward several times, telling him of Howard Hunt's involvement with the Watergate break-in, and that the White House staff regarded the stakes in Watergate extremely high. Felt warned Woodward that the FBI wanted to know where he and other reporters were getting their information, as they were uncovering a wider web of crimes than the FBI first disclosed. All of the secret meetings between Woodward and Felt took place at an underground parking garage somewhere in Rosslyn over a period from June 1972 to January 1973. Prior to resigning from the FBI on June 22, 1973, Felt also anonymously planted leaks about Watergate with Time magazine, the Washington Daily News and other publications. The garage in Rosslyn where Woodward and Felt met, seen in January 2018; also visible is the historical marker erected by the county to note its significance. During this early period, most of the media failed to grasp the full implications of the scandal, and concentrated reporting on other topics related to the 1972 presidential election. Most outlets ignored or downplayed Woodward and Bernstein's scoops; the crosstown Washington Star-News and the Los Angeles Times even ran stories incorrectly discrediting the Post's articles. After the Post revealed that H.R. Haldeman made payments from the secret fund, newspapers like the Chicago Tribune and the Philadelphia Inquirer failed to publish the information, but did publish the White House's denial of the story the following day. The White House also sought to isolate the Post's coverage by tirelessly attacking that newspaper while declining to criticize other damaging stories about the scandal from the New York Times and Time Magazine.

Important thing is pay your bills and credit card on time very month and don't buy a lot of clothes, cosmetics, knick knacks and
useless items, which I don't do, but as a working artist I do have to buy art materials. Look after you health, stay positive. 6-12-2018
https://www.wikihow.com/Live-Without-Money I gave up TV, read used books, donate books, have always cooked my own food, grown vegetables when able, grown fruit trees when/where have land, foraged in woods (NEVER eat wild mushrooms) only eat items you can positively identify. I exchange most plant cuttings with friends, now sell upcycled clothes. It's not easy to do completely without money and even Buddhist monks now have credit cards and probably cell phone and GPS (the walking monk) but they do live entirely on donations. I toyed with idea once, but my Pol. Sci prof scolded me out of it, and anyway, it was just a bout of sibling rivalry, maybe. One still needs a secure warm place to live. But I can do on a lot less than most people and even eat well, for instance by making pate myself and even beef tartare and other gourmet foods like scones and clotted cream. Also I shop very carefully. Good luck, as they say. KMKaung 6-12-2018
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/04/does-home-delivery-from-ikea-mean-we-never-have-to-visit-the-store-ever-again I'd do it. I dislike old furniture with sad stories and I won't last much longer either. My IKEA stuff when I moved to this city has lasted 20+ years, so has my son's except for one wardrobe with corner chewed by teething Saint Bernard, but it's at the back. IKEA furniture is fine for me and even PRAISED by Burmese migrants and refugees. Besides, my home is where I live, not where my furniture lives on top of me, and it's my workshop and sewing place. I still have IKEA chopping block, knife set, some of pot set--cutlery. Nothing wrong with them but don't buy too cheap versions. Oh, and wall mirror. Which made me look thin and now makes me look fat, and some frames but glass very thin. And I remember when I bought them and my first job, when I moved to DC and that god-awful Burmese radio job with a jerk boss. That's what I mean, houses, furniture, clothes, anything, even plants, not all the memories are good ones. Ref. plant I bought from an Indian woman who was being expelled from Burma due to her race. I water that Amazon lily carefully,

I try to do what he just did, and sometimes it works, this morning got worse. Well, have to adjust again. Usually I adjust the bottom and then the top-- In case of old one, I had it heavy use abt 20+ years, never oiled and bottom could not be opened, finally I opened it, lot of lint, 20 years worth in there, plus a needle that fell in, and I was able to fix, using cooking oil. These machines don't give you enough screwdrivers etc. Finally, old model--feeder dogs fell in, and I would need a long-handled screw driver to fix, and could not find a mechanic though asked around, so ordered this model, which had same problem, fixed and dared not touch, but somehow happening again. Last night had to watch Summit live 8 PM, and at 7.50 I cursed sewing machine, "If you don't work, I will stop sewing," and it made a straight stitch, wh I had no time to check due to live TV, wh only showed motorcade going along, and outside of building in Sentosa with the very fat woman, maybe in charge of press corps. I liked her black and white dress, but she was so large, sorry to say, pattern was like a cow, but she was very pretty. Maybe she should have chosen an ombre pastel floral in soft fabric. This morning I checked back of stitch/cloth, and in adjusting, made it worse, many times opening bottom, laying machine on side to put bottom back in. Now much much worse, big loops and jamming, but I am going to put on my sweater, air con too cold, brush my teeth and try again. What a life. Plus I had to vaccuum around the machine and my chair as so much black thread on floor. FYI, I have been making my own clothes, probably 00s of dollars worth, since I was about 11 or 12, and have done FOUR craft shows, including a trunk show with live models, and sold wearable art and knit scarves, and I keep sewing because I can, and this machine has a self-threader though eyes are a challenge. Now I don't know whether I should bless or curse the machine. kmkaung 6-12-2018

On the other hand, N Korea regularly starves its citizens for weapons build up. KJU's former classmates at the school in Switzerland said he was "gluttonous, a bully and required a slavish loyalty." Remember how he killed his uncle and stepfather and Otto Warmbier not so long ago. I don't think any good will come of it and "talks" are over-hyped to again distract from Mueller probe. Fascinating book, birth of VOA https://www.amazon.com/Being-Red-Memoir-Howard-Fast/dp/1563244993#reader_1563244993 stumbled on by accident but reminds me a lot of Birth of RFA (Radio Free Asia) where I was 1 year (1997) after it was formed--unfortunately, after I was pushed out 2001 because my programs were popular in Burma, it has become a corrupt monster. But no one knows because no one cares to check what they are saying, incld calling Rohingya "Bengali Muslims." well, not my problem now, waste of taxpayer money. I was never in the accounts section and don't know their budget. Like RGH (Rangoon General Hospital) which was built of laterite, and had tetanus in the walls, my cousin's friend a doctor said, "It would be better to bomb the whole thing and build a new hospital." If you don't understand what I am saying, interview me and write an article and place it somewhere, but I won't waste time explaining via email. I was just looking for Howard Fast, that's all. VOA and RFA are not the same, I never worked at VOA and I don't know anything about it except that dispatches are still written centrally as Fast did, and then translated into all the languages, at least that's what I read some time ago on their website, but some country specific items must be produced in house, such as when they interviewed me about my art show. http://gutenberg.ca/ebooks/lewiss-itcanthappenhere/lewiss-itcanthappenhere-00-h.html I bought my paperback in a bookstore about a year ago, as this is one of the novels (the others are Gerore Orwell's 1984 and Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged) said to be highly reminiscent of present trmp era. I am still reading the Sinclair Lewis and the Rand is a bit hard to read due to very small font and rather ponderous style. I recommend a bookstore in 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, as there are so few bookstores left, and it takes a lot to look for things online. kmk 6-11-2018

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/41/41-h/41-h.htm I was so fortunate to have a cousin who lived in Westchester, and visited many of these places while visiting him and his family. To this day he drives me around, but he's moved to a Rocky Mountain state, so we never got to go to Culinary Institute of America nor to Storm King Art Center. He invited me often, but I was unable to go, due to lack of money, personal problems, tiredness or a tight schedule, and now I missed that wonderful opportunity. But I thank KK and A. for all the lovely visits and the food and companionship. 6-10-2018
ABC interviews, what can be expected from N Korea summit in Singapore. https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/trump-kim-summit-expect-nkorea-foot-bill-55628805 It does not look good for USA and trmp who admittedly is not prepared and does not think he needs to. N Korean could very well say they have less nuclear capability than they do have. Dr Sue Mi Terry says there are 000s of tunnels and all very well hidden, and Bill Richardson says he should do one on one "trust building" "because he's a charming negotiator." In the end will USA get back a few sets of remains (sorry if this sounds crude and tasteless) and will have given away way too much. Stay tuned. MSNBC live coverage of Summit starts at 8 PM EST US time on Monday. kmk 6-10-2018

Elizabeth's personal fortune has been the subject of speculation for many years. In 1971 Jock Colville, her former private secretary and a director of her bank, Coutts, estimated her wealth at £2 million (equivalent to about £26 million in 2016). In 1993, Buckingham Palace called estimates of £100 million "grossly overstated". In 2002, she inherited an estate worth an estimated £70 million from her mother. The Sunday Times Rich List 2017 estimated her personal wealth at £360 million, making her the 329th richest person in the UK. The Royal Collection, which includes thousands of historic works of art and the Crown Jewels, is not owned by the Queen personally but is held in trust, as are her official residences, such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, and the Duchy of Lancaster, a property portfolio valued at £472 million in 2015. Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle are personally owned by the Queen. The British Crown Estate – with holdings of £12 billion in 2016 – is held in trust and cannot be sold or owned by Elizabeth in a personal capacity. In each of her realms she has a distinct title that follows a similar formula: Queen of Jamaica and her other realms and territories in Jamaica, Queen of Australia and her other realms and territories in Australia, etc. In the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, which are Crown dependencies rather than separate realms, she is known as Duke of Normandy and Lord of Mann, respectively. Additional styles include Defender of the Faith and Duke of Lancaster. When in conversation with the Queen, the practice is to initially address her as Your Majesty and thereafter as Ma'am. Arms
