My Facebook ad for my novella The Rider of Crocodiles has started to run--

My FB ad for my novella Rider of Crocodiles--

so far so good, but I do not know how much actual sales it will generate yet.

I've designed it so that it is for a fixed total amount which means ad is billed until x amount is reached.

Then ad stops running.

So far it has been on one day.

There were 107 hits on my Rider of Crocodiles Amazon page.

I have done it this way rather than through my website, as one click is only one click, and so I decided to do my ads book by book, direct to the book sales site.

Then I am billed bit by bit.

It is still a lot more sales site hits than I suppose I was getting, though there was no counter before.

Of course it needs to generate more than x amount in direct sales.

Don't become or be labelled a thief--

Educate yourself, don't become or be labeled a Thief--

There is nothing honorable about stealing something that does not belong to you.

Artists and writers have to make a living too and have already sacrificed too much for their art.

Please do not commit Intellectual Property Theft, it is a Crime--

It may not be anyone I know, but 2 of my books, FGM and Pelted with Petals are being offered on free download sites.

I have reported these to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

I did not authorize any of these sites, so it constitutes intellectual property theft.

Writers and visual artists are already struggling.

Please do not patronize these free download sites.

I am still alive and my copyrights are going to be valid for 70 years after my death, after which they will be indefinitely renewed.

Please do not promote or yourself commit Intellectual Property Theft.

It is a crime, pure and simple.

Excerpt from novel Black Prince of Siam, by Kyi May Kaung

They were broken in with iron chun probes shaped like eagles’ talons, set on a wood handles like hatchets, and only occasional kind treatment, perhaps to inure them to the hard work carrying logs on their trunks, or dragging them, or to elevate their pain threshold in war.
Their war training was very specialized, but even at the age of seven or eight, in the elephant kraal in Phitsanulok, Narasuan had insisted that the chun be used sparingly.
He was convinced from all he had seen and heard that elephants had long memories.
He himself marked his Enemies as well as his Friends for Life.
He did not see how an Elephant could do otherwise.
He always told the mahouts, “Your elephants are difficult to find, expensive to feed and take years to train.  You don’t want an elephant to mark you and then seize the opportune moment in the heat of battle, to turn against you.  They are living beings just like you and me, remember that.”
When he was king, he ordered that the Burmese prisoner of war mahout Nga Xo who had killed his elephant because he said, it had panicked and was in musth, by severing its spinal cord with a knife during the Battle of Ayuthia in 1593, be executed by an elephant trampling on him.
He considered it an act of Sabotage, killing his expensive war animal like that.
In the way used in the courts of the Indian rajas, the man was first encircled by the trunk of a specially trained execution elephant and then squashed with one giant foot.[i]  It was no more difficult than stepping on a water melon.
From then on Narasuan forbade mahouts from carrying these daggers on pain of death.

1978 murder of British communist scholar from SOAS School of Oriental and African Studies by Pol Pot's people.

Everyone should read this.  Especially the women who want to sleep with the enemy, the men and women who think they can tango with the junta.  All those who think they can handle dictators of any sort, those at the family level to the country level.

In this case even Noam Chomsky was wrong.

It all smacks of Stalinist collective farm policy and investing the "surplus" in industry.

As I wrote, now Cambodia is still without even small scale cottage industries, though many hotels.  Our 3 star hotel had plastic fruit on the table, and the Thai tour took us to cheap Vietnamese restaurants.  I avoided Pnom Penh as I did not want to see the killing fields or Tuol Seng on a first trip, and so far I have not been back.

This is an EXCELLENT article and I strongly recommend it.  Somewhere else, in an article I now cannot find, Elizabeth Becker wrote of the night in the guest house, with the corpse of Caldwell? in the room next door.

It all happened literally during the death throes of the Khmer Rouge.

I don't rate articles, but this is about a 7 out of 5.

Bravo Jenny Beaven--costume designer--

Bravo Jenny Beaven, see below.

You are being honored for your work.

Not for what you wear when you get a prize.

She should have worn one of her masks from Mad Max--

I would probably be better dressed, but I would carry one of my art works as an accessory.

Imagine coming up the red carpet, holding a mask she made instead of a handbag.

I must remember that.

Artists can't be expected to be thin, blond and tall and wear $100,000 dresses.

I did not know they were that expensive, these designer dresses.

I agree with her, I only look at Alexander McQueen too, he is the true fine artist.

The Rider of Crocodiles --Discussion about my Thai/Burmese history research with Fan--from my Facebook page

Narasuan shrine in Phitsanulok, Thailand, and Chan Palace ruins--+ Chinnarat Buddha and Phitsanulok environs. The black statue is the Black Prince Narasuan, and the gold figure is his sister Supankalya, given in marriage to Bayinnaung to get Narasuan back in a 16th century prisoner/hostage exchange.

Kyi May Kaung Yes, I worked on it 10 hours yesterday and will try to keep going. Previously, I had a fact checker who runs an Ayuthia blog check the Ayuthia related matters. I will try and find his very comprehensive website again. The names of the monuments keep changing and I have to find out if they existed in N's lifetime, 1555-1605, and what they were called then. Also the names of the people and titles change too. Quite confusing. Try and read Tin Than Oo, Ayuthia Thitsar in Burmese--2 volumes, very nice novel all based on Burmese chronicles. I found it as 2 Thai scholars in Phitsanulok helped me find it. One was Thai professor of Burmese--Sunait has also written on it, but I did not contact him. He consulted on the movies. I will message you privately if you wish to be First Reader for drafts, but you may not share any of the privileged materials, not even with your wife and family, before or after publication. I think best is to wait. The Ayuthia website person worked for me free and was very reliable, very detail oriented but he did not comment on story and plot.

Kyi May Kaung Tin Than Oo's novel is like a movie. He also writes from Narasuan's point of view, but only using Burmese sources, rather romantic view. I also am writing from N's p o v, but using Thai and other sources, chiefly Prince Damrong's biography of N., translated & edited by Kennon Breazeale. Still, the Prince's Thai was very repetitive, so like his Thai Rop Hpama, Our Wars with the Burmese, translated by U Aung Thein Yodaya, (Daw Sein Sein's father) it is frustrating to read as the sentences are long and vague and as royalty himself, he is title conscious, so he will say Somdet Pra Narasuan every time, dozens of times in each chapter, and "the uparaja" w/o saying which one, Nanda, Thai or Burmese, or "the king" also w/o saying which king. smile emoticon My entire copy is full of edit marks scratching out unnecessary words, though I am sure it has already been edited by translators. Not at all like Ernest Hemingway or mine or U Win Tin's style of terse writing. I also write notes to myself in the margins. So far I have only got to the point when N's father switched sides and becomes a Burmese vassal. Of course I made up many scenes and dialog as I am writing historical fiction, not history, which would be very boring and confusing and also next to useless, cheers, kmk

Kyi May Kaung Photos are from my self financed research trip of 2 days driving down from Chiangmai to Bangkok with guide and driver(one person) in a big van in Nov 2010, with stops in Sisatchanalai (Suwankhalok), Sokhotai, Phitsanulok and Lopburi. I saw temple image where Narasuan addressed his followers, Narai Palace (later than Narasuan)--Narai sent a mission to France--several centuries before Kinwun Mingyi, pavilion where Narai was killed (Read Maurice Collis' Siamese White for Narai era and trade through Beik, East India Co-.)-- and Constantin Phaulkon's house--Greek Foreign & Trade Minister for Narai!'. Phaulkon was impaled, I think, takyin sho thut khan htii tair, his street has a French name, and his wife was Siamese-Japanese, taken into kitchens as a slave by Narai's successor, Petraraja? I try not to get too spread out, but as you see very fascinating.

No, this is not sequel or prequel of anything I have written yet. The numbers refer to the numbers of novellas and short story collections I have published so far, and the stories are all different, with different settings and characters. However, I do intend some day to continue the story of Saman, the Rider of Crocodiles with a story about the Fig Flower King who was taken to Ava, and is buried near the U Pein Bridge. If you go please look for it. Other than that I guess you would have to just read my border stories Dancing like a Peacock, and/or wait for my Narasuan novel, which I am still writing. But Narasuan died in 1605, so that is over a century before the crocodile story and the final fall of Ayuthia. I am pleased there is such an interest in my fictional stories. Many people ask me what happened to Saman, what happened to Black Rice, what happened to Snow Maiden.

Excellent documentary--The Making of Amadeus--about Mozart--director Milos Forman

Highly recommended--documentary--The Making of Amadeus--

This movie certainly led to my discovering Mozart. I have seen it twice, but should see it again, now that I know the music better.

Remembering U Win Tin --short post--

NLD U Win Tin--
Life and the junta treated him badly
but he whacked at it with courage and was unfazed.
He wore blue in honor of those political prisoners still in prison and those who were in prison.
When he died, someone wrote, "Uncle, please give up your blue shirt now."

He only got his citizenship card when he was on his deathbed.
RIP

Excerpt from U Win Tin's What's That? A Human Hell.

Quote from late great U Win Tin whose What's That? A Human Hell I am translating--
"The way that Time magazine wrote about it, it sounded as if Burma's great big ahmayboke political yarn tangle would be untangled at once, shaw ka nair, myore ka nair, like eating smooth khaukswe noodles."
Translation copyright Dr. Kyi May Kaung--
You MAY NOT quote without written permission from me.
But you can share this on Facebook--but my name has to be on it.
No mispelled names or removing my Ph.D.
