Progression to the mean (number) is a statistical term.

It explains why the offspring of tall men don't keep growing taller and taller and vice versa for other physical straits.

But a kingdom or nation state can fracture into rump states (Roman Empire) a government may be overthrown or annihilated (Hitler, WW II Japan) a system can disappear in minutes (atomic bomb, meteor hit which killed the dinosaurs--ascendency of underground mammals)

It's easier to die off than to rebuild. Take head.
