I've only read the online sample, but this looks like an excellent novel, translated by the equally excellent Howard Goldblatt, who has also translated Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, especially Red Sorghum, one of my all time favorite novels.
In the opening scene, the Japanese skin a Chinese man alive.
Maybe not to your taste, but I can't help that.
