Michael Whitaker, the US government’s aviation chief, stood down earlier this month amid pressure from Elon Musk.
The Tesla billionaire tapped by Donald Trump to run the Department of Government Efficiency had publicly called on the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to resign.
Mr Whitaker stepped away on 20 January, the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, after around 15 months in the job.
As a result, the FAA was leaderless when a passenger jet collided with a helicopter over Washington D.C.
Hours after the crash, Donald Trump signed an executive order installing Chris Rocheleau as acting administrator of FAA.
