It's amazing how great writers can write--it's too late now and I must get some sleep--but tomorrow
I will write about these 3 plays of Church (of England) vs King and State.
In chronological order, as the events they are based on happened, they are:
1. Jean Anouilh's Becket.
2. TS Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral.
These 2 above are about Henry II vs Saint (later) Thomas a Becket.
3.Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons--about Henry VIII vs Sir Thomas More, where the 2 rings also make an appearance..
One of the reasons English history is so hard to understand is there are so many similar names and we know things in episodes, and don't see the big picture.
*
I love them all--being asked to choose which is "the best" is like being asked which of your children you love the most--or maybe you hate them all.
