This was also my father's favorite song, when he came back from his 4 month tour of schools in N and S America with poet Zawgyi and others.
He brought back long playing records and a Reckokut player.
We went over from Windermere Crescent to Fytche Road to play South Pacific to my aunt and uncle and their family.
My father said to Uncle and Aunty, "Hold her in your arms with her hair falling down her back."
Uncle and Aunty at that time were the models for a happy marriage in our family. Uncle Shawn was taller than most, very sporty, not fat, well-tanned and had a beautiful smile full of even white teeth, that I noted the first time I saw him when he came to the mouth of the Rangoon River with the riverine pilot, jumped off the motor launch and climbed up the rope ladder to us on the deck of the HMS Worcestershire.
We had jst arrived home from 3 years in England. I was 7.
Aunty was taller than most Burmese women too, well-built and strong, very bright, sweet and kind. Aunty Anouk "Small Change" because she grew up in an orphanage, was easily my favorite aunt until she died in 2008. She spelled her name the French way.
In 1950 she was already fluent in Hindi, Burmese and English. In the next 2 decades she would aid 2 kinds of Thai--the high-end aristocratic Thai, and the colloquial bazaar variety.
She gave up French lessons at the Alliance Francaise where my sister and I went, because Uncle said just one sentence when she got home from her only lesson, "But Darling, you won't be here when I get home from work."
I never could change myself so much for anyone.
Uncle looked quizzically at Daddy, his expression saying, "Oh, I can't do that."
So Daddy placed the needle down and the song started, "I touch your hand and my arms grow strong, like a pair of birds that burst with song."
I learned to love songs with words from these Broadway musicals.
Now, the probem with movies, is that the actors can never sing as well as the original Broadway stars.
I prefer the Broadway original cast. John Kerr certainly looks nice, but if I had a choice, I'd dub in Mario Lanza--who had operatic training.
