Burma, America, The World, Art, Literature, Political Economy through the eyes of a Permanent Exile. "We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the oppressed. Sometimes we must interfere. . . There is so much injustice and suffering crying out for our attention . . . writers and poets, prisoners in so many lands governed by the left and by the right." Oh--my big mistake--The White Countess was written by Nobel Laureate
Kazao Ishiguru, whom I met once at a book signing in Philadelphia, way back in the 1990s.
And it's not Liam Neeson--it's Ralph Fiennes--
A beautiful, understated, granular movie.
Other stellar cast members include Lynn Redgrave.
It would please my late professor and his wife--who named their daughter Vanessa.
The movie starts with the blind man's hand in a bar, and ends with 2 hands on a junk sailing to Macao from Shanghai.
