Poets from Myanmar are usually
outlaws by default and they often end up in jail, which is why so many
live in exile. It’s either that or prison.
Take the late Tin Moe. By the time he
joined Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy he was already a
respected poet and intellectual. His politics earned him four years in
the infamous Insein prison where, as an extra cruelty, he was denied
reading or writing materials. After his release he fled the country and
died in 2007 while exiled in Los Angeles.
In this extract from his poem “Awake from
a Homesick Dream” there is a strong sense of disorientation in lines
such as “the fluctuating graph of my dream / deformed”. Then the poet is
“wandering in Germany, England, Belgium and Holland” as if unsure if he
is still dreaming or awake. This sets the tone for the rest of the
poem, one of woozy unreality where the poet struggles to find a sense of
terra firma, “that path I believe / still vague”. The only safe,
sequential descriptions occur when the poet describes his home life,
where he would “spread a mat / compose poems and read / hum songs / sip
tea”. In these brief lines the poem loses its shaky, bewildered tone and
finds stability in memories of home.
Many of Tin Moe’s poems were translated
into English by fellow Myanmar poet Kyi May Kaung. Kaung received
political asylum in the US in 1989 after the failure of the
pro-democracy demonstrations in Myanmar, and she has been railing
against the prevailing military junta with paintbrush and pen ever
since. Her poem “Geese” opens with a question: “Are those clouds or are
those mountains[?]” By not providing an answer the poet shuns exactitude
and opens the door to possibility. The setting is dawn – a time of new
beginnings, uncertainty and possibility. Only the geese seem sure of
themselves, “flying in one straight / line”. The poet muses: “I must ask
the geese”, but this intention is not enacted, so it remains a
possibility, a dream.
A committed activist and campaigner for a
free and democratic Myanmar, Kaung’s idealism is writ large in this
poem. For her, the way forward is clear and hopeful even if the details
are “with the mist”.

What is the difference between deactivating and deleting your Facebook account--from Facebook
If you deactivate your account:
- You can reactivate whenever you want.
- People can't see your Timeline or search for you.
- Some info may remain visible (ex: messages you sent).
- We save your account info (ex: friends, interests), in case you reactivate.
If you delete your account:
- We delay deletion a few days after it's requested. If you log in during this time, deletion is canceled.
- You can't regain access once it's deleted.
- It may take up to 90 days to delete data stored in backup systems. Your info isn't accessible on Facebook during this time.
- Some things aren't stored in your account. For example, a friend may have messages from you after deletion.
- Copies of some material (ex: log records) may remain in our database but are disassociated from personal identifiers.

FB is not panning out for me and is causing more problems, through the cloned account, than it is worth.
True, it allowed me to re-connect with old friends and form an online artistic and writerly, and political community of sorts, and my "friend base" is larger, I can communicate faster and on a daily basis with friends--
but this --about 1500 "friends" is about the largest # I need or want.
Spending too much time on the internet makes my eyes red and my head ache.
ZYX's wife was right and although one in 7 people on this globe use FB, it also causes a lot of divorces.
In economic language, the benefits are not worth the cost, including the opportunity cost (the time wasted, by not doing other things that are more worth doing, such as sleeping or reading a book, or writing)--so I will be on it less.
Also the marginal returns are not worth the marginal benefit, which is becoming negative--
more problems from trying to solve one--e.g. the cloned FB site.
Also, it causes security issues with "friends" who may not even be real human beings, maybe SLORC spies, maybe dummies or dummy sites or malware putting in sites or phishing sites.
So bye bye birdie,
I will check it once a day like regular email
and post 1 or 2 items a day, but not much one on one wrangling or tangling--
I already feel better.
After all I don't get on FB for days when I am out of town, but I don't tell you where I am or when I am leaving or returning.

More on Facebook cloning--
What they do--they ask your real friends for money in your name using the fake account--
Again, there is a fake account/mirror acct/clone acct out there with my real name which looks exactly like mine except for a # sign after the name--I am dealing with it right now.
DO NOT accept repeated friend requests (one time too much is too many) from people you know.
I have a good memory for faces and names, but even then--one article says a security expert managed to fool another--they like people with a lot of friends/well known.

Therefore I am boycotting BBC Burmese for life.
As for the other groups, you still have to ask me first.
BBC Burmese woman also hired a man accused of human rights abuses on the Burma-China border, and not just by one victim. And not just your garden variety abuse.
Therefore I consider her a junta plant, just like her predecessor kkm. (not related to me in any way.)

John Jakes' Kent Family Chronicles + North South Trilogy --1976 and 1982
Sounds good--North and South also begins with the Main and Hazard ancestors in England and France--in the case of the Mains, they are French Huegonauts (sp?) fleeing the Inquisition, and the Hazard ancestor just murdered his abusive stepfather, while he was interning at an iron foundry, and thus learning the trade, and had to flee to America.
So he took the iron master's name. His stepfather was illiterate and the iron master helped him escape.
The themes of iron and war and slavery run right through the trilogy.
John Jakes wrote the 8! Kent novels first.
He must be a very fast writer, for the 8+3=11 novels, each about 700 pages with many characters and story lines, were written in a fairly short time, less than a decade, I think.
I have finished reading the N and S trilogy to Vol II, and will write about the differences between the books/novels and the TV miniseries when I finish reading all 3 books.
I agree with other critics, of the 3 TV series, the last does not match the first 2.
It's very confusing to have Charlie played by a different actor.
There are other problems due to the screenwriters' over simplification.
In general the books are much better than the TV.
That is why I am always in favor of reading, and those who only watch movies are very shallow--

So, is he not to share his knowledge of mathematics (in which he has a Ph.D. from Germany) with students and other young people and interested persons?
His knowledge in higher mathematics is so great he has been repeatedly asked to edit well known international mathematical articles.
(Translator's note: Like many others, including me, Dr. Sein Win essentially gave up his chosen career, mathematics in an academic setting, to " do politics" for the good of Burma. For those of you who do not know, he was elected in his constituency in the 1990 elections in Burma, and then had to flee to the Thai Border, where the NCGUB National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, was first set up. It is also known colloquially as The Exile Government, but was disbanded in 2012, mainly due to loss of funding from international donors, especially Norway. Like long time NLD National League for Democracy strategist U Win Tin, whose memoir I am translating, at the time, I felt that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi should not "tango with the junta" but as U WT said, "As we are on the same side, even if I do not agree, I must support her."
Now, Daw Suu also has been badly used.
Dr. Sein Win's father was U Ba Win, brother of Bogyoke Aung San, the Father of the Burmese Nation, and who died on the same day, at the same moment, 19th July 1947, of assassins' bullets.

U Ba Win looked remarkably like his son Dr. Sein Win. He is the one with glasses smiling widely, happy at the success of the talks in which Atlee promised that Burma would be granted Independence.)

Is signing an affidavit and pledging not to do politics a just reward for an old sage who has given his life for democracy in Burma?
သူျမတ္ႏိုုးတဲ့ သခ်ာၤသမားဘ၀ကိုု စြန္႔လႊတ္၊ မိသားစုုအေရးကိုု ပယ္ျပီး တိုုင္းျပည္အေရးကိုု သယ္၊ (၁၀၁) ႏွစ္အထိ ေနသြားခဲ့တဲ့ အေမအိုုခင္မ်ာ သားအတြက္ ဆုုေတာင္းျခင္းမွလြဲ၍ စာတေၾကာင္း၊ ဖုုန္းတေခၚမွ် မရရွသြားခဲ့ဘူး။
He had to abandon the mathematical career he loved, live far from his family of origin and work for the greater good of Burma. His dear mother who lived to be 101 was never allowed by the regime to even write one line to him, or enjoy one phone conversation, and could do nothing but pray for her son.
(Translator's note--I went to the yet lair soon or seven day feast for monks at the home of Daw Si Si Thwe and Dr. Sein Win when she passed away. The rental unit had only one chair, on which I sat, since the monk had left already, and there was a lot of food, though no complete set of cutlery.)

Is the only reward of an old sage who has given his life for his country, lived frugally all his life, has been called a Living National Treasure by ethnic leaders, and a model of integrity by foreingers who come in touch with him, to have this sole reward of "Sign and affidavit. write a letter pleading for leniency, don't join any groups, just go see your relatives?"
(Daw Si Si Thwe told me on the phone that they just wanted a visa to go back to visit the old country for a short time, but were denied. Moemakha Online, in which her article first appeared, wrote that the consul at the DC Myanmar Embassy was asked to explain his action. Poet Tin Moe's daughter Moe Choe Thinn has also written an article. I feel it is the right, human right, God-given right or any person to return safely to the country in which they were born. MCT wrote that Dr SW/Daw Si Si said that, they signed as a sign of respect towards an elected government. Since Spring of this year, Burma has had a nominally "democratic government" with the military still holding the real power. I consider it merely a facade to get West to lift sanctions.)

I understand now the (crestfallen) faces and vices of those who applied for entry visas and came back (to their countries of refuge and exile).

I understand now, not just the meaning of the words, "Return home with dignity" but also at the deepest level of feeling, almost as a physical pain.

When will we be allowed to return with our full human dignity intact?

His knowledge in higher mathematics is so great he has been repeatedly asked to edit well known international mathematical articles.
(Translator's note: Like many others, including me, Dr. Sein Win essentially gave up his chosen career, mathematics in an academic setting, to " do politics" for the good of Burma. For those of you who do not know, he was elected in his constituency in the 1990 elections in Burma, and then had to flee to the Thai Border, where the NCGUB National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, was first set up. It is also known colloquially as The Exile Government, but was disbanded in 2012, mainly due to loss of funding from international donors, especially Norway. Like long time NLD National League for Democracy strategist U Win Tin, whose memoir I am translating, at the time, I felt that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi should not "tango with the junta" but as U WT said, "As we are on the same side, even if I do not agree, I must support her."
Now, Daw Suu also has been badly used.
Dr. Sein Win's father was U Ba Win, brother of Bogyoke Aung San, the Father of the Burmese Nation, and who died on the same day, at the same moment, 19th July 1947, of assassins' bullets.

He had to abandon the mathematical career he loved, live far from his family of origin and work for the greater good of Burma. His dear mother who lived to be 101 was never allowed by the regime to even write one line to him, or enjoy one phone conversation, and could do nothing but pray for her son.
(Translator's note--I went to the yet lair soon or seven day feast for monks at the home of Daw Si Si Thwe and Dr. Sein Win when she passed away. The rental unit had only one chair, on which I sat, since the monk had left already, and there was a lot of food, though no complete set of cutlery.)

(Daw Si Si Thwe told me on the phone that they just wanted a visa to go back to visit the old country for a short time, but were denied. Moemakha Online, in which her article first appeared, wrote that the consul at the DC Myanmar Embassy was asked to explain his action. Poet Tin Moe's daughter Moe Choe Thinn has also written an article. I feel it is the right, human right, God-given right or any person to return safely to the country in which they were born. MCT wrote that Dr SW/Daw Si Si said that, they signed as a sign of respect towards an elected government. Since Spring of this year, Burma has had a nominally "democratic government" with the military still holding the real power. I consider it merely a facade to get West to lift sanctions.)

Greeting to 28th Anniversary of 8888
I
could not forget those times of hope, anger, and frustration of 8888.
People from all walks of life—students, workers, farmers, monks,
etc.—demonstrated nation-wide for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
These movements of people, especially young students, motivated us to do
some political work for the movement to change the situation.
Today,
we witness the 28th Anniversary of 8888. During these long struggling
years, it was "The Spirit of 8888" that pushed us to continue our work.
The final questions remain! Are we out of the wood? Are the demands of
8888 fulfilled?
We
are still not out of the wood, but the situation is improving. 2015
elections had clearly given the mandate to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD
to work for the change. We need ethnic harmony, cessation of civil
war, and peace for the country to be able to enjoy freedom, democracy,
and human rights—the demands of 8888.
While
we are working and thinking about the changes, we also have to think
and work for the development of the country. It is the time to give our
best for the welfare of the people. It is the time to remember and honor
our fallen heroes of 8888.
Let us make a vow to continue our work until the demands of 8888 are fulfilled.

King Lear gave away his kingdom and his power to the 2 daughters who flattered him, leaving only a personal bodyguard of 100?
Eventually, he lost all, including his sanity for a short time. Only the court jester stayed near him. The good youngest daughter Cordelia also died. The 2 others killed each other in their endless plots.
See also Akiro Kurasawa's Ran where the daughters are transformed into sons, but Kurasawa said it is based on a Japanese story. It could be so.
In any case, the copyrights on Shakespeare's work would have long expired, or there were no copyrights in his day.
Both are masterpieces, and Shakespeare, like the opera maestro Puccini for one, got his plots from elsewhere.
