Review of Francis Wade's book, The Enemy Within

I met Francis Wade once, about 20 years ago, when he was working with Irrawaddy magazine.

A very calm and well-motivated person, very grounded.  Not the typical "journalistic type" at all.

I suggested that our non-profit invite him to talk on panel about Burma.

This was well before the Rohingya crisis and genocide erupted, but I had been hearing an army version of this since the mid 1970s, from my only unreliable narrator at that time, a work colleague, "Puffy Hair", who liked to boast of her relationship to General Ne Win.

That was one horrifying small-minded superstitious xenophobe.

Enough said.  I guess I and others sat around this person at lunch because we got a lot of (rather warped) info that way, in a strictly controlled country.

Whenever I think of this, the smell of the clogged lavatories comes back to me.

As it does when I undergo stressful situations here.
