The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar on Wednesday urged member states to reject the junta’s planned election.

“I made as clearly as I possibly could that these elections are a sham and they are a fraud”, Tom Andrews told a press conference after presenting his report at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.
Andrews stressed that a free and fair election could not be held with political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi still behind bars, rival parties forcibly disbanded, and free expression and media freedom restricted.

Over 22,500 political prisoners are still in detention, while 7,423 junta opponents have been killed since the 2021 coup, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
Meanwhile, the National League for Democracy, which won landslide victories in the 2015 and 2020 elections, is among more than 40 political parties disbanded after the regime amended the registration law in favour of its proxy, the Union Solidarity and Development Party.
